FTP or file transfer protocol is a common method of transferring files across the Internet. Using what is called an FTP client it is actually faster than a browser or email downloads with less hassle since you don't have to retrieve files one at a time.

Companies such as software development companies, major modem manufacturers, and major computer companies all would generally have files available for ftp.
